The
Internet is particularly
well suited to distance
learning. It provides an
organization with the ability to
reach its employees virtually
anywhere in the world, and to
record their progress in a
central location. This remote
accessibility still has a
handicap though … the cost and
limited availability of high
bandwidth connections.
The situation is slowly
improving, but many users are
still limited to dial-up
connections or cable Internet (a
connection type that is often
shared with other households in
the same neighborhood). DSL has
a limited range, preventing
large areas (even in major
cities) from receiving this
service, and T1 or fiber
connections are far too
expensive for the average user
to afford.
Many
e-training systems respond
to this limitation by limiting
their content to text and audio.
Some use Flash to include
animations and more complex
graphics, but that requires the
download and installation of
Macromedia's Flash Player. Those
that use video are often forced
to sacrifice much of the quality
and limit the clips to "talking
head" footage in order to make
their service available to
dial-up users.
It was into this environment
that Didaskosm
Communications introduced CD-RSsm
technology, effectively enabling
us to deliver high quality,
full-motion video and full-color
graphics, while still
taking
advantage of the power of the
Internet.
Here is How it Works:
 |
Didaskosm
Communications takes the
video and graphics you
specify, and assembles
them into a 20 to 40
minute module covering
your desired training
topic(s). |
 |
The module is then
prepared for use by CD-RSsm,
and written onto a
CD-ROM disc. |
 |
The student inserts this
disc into their
computer, and it
establishes a connection
to the training system
running on our server,
identifying itself and
the course(s) it
contains. |
 |
The student logs in and
begins the training. The
course on the disc is
now associated with the
employee for the
duration of the training
session. Material
normally requiring
high-bandwidth is
retrieved from the CD,
while the interactivity
and real-time tracking
features are managed by
the training application
on our server. |
 |
The entire process is
seamless to the student.
All the video, audio,
slides, questions, and
supporting material is
presented in one
compact, easy to use
interface. Screenshots
of the system in
operation are available. |
